A Note from David
My 2012 Orion magazine article, “Look, Don’t Touch: The Problem With Environmental Education,” expounds on one of the major issues in environmental education today—educators are too focused on rules and learning scientific terms instead of letting kids be kids. As I write in the piece, much of environmental education today has taken on a museum mentality, where nature is a composed exhibit on the other side of the glass. Children can look at it and study it, but they can’t do anything with it.
The article sparked over 75 comments on the Orion website, and press attention from the New York Times to New Hampshire Public Radio.
I love discussing environmental education issues like these with teachers, parents, neighbors, principals, kids, and readers alike. If you have questions or comments about my articles, books, or lectures, I’d love to hear from you. Please share your thoughts and questions below or send me an email.
